Yesterday, I went to a preview of the new exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, titled, Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000. It is a fascinating overview of the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood. It includes school architecture, furniture, books games, toys and Montessori materials.
Yes, Maria Montessori was referenced several times as a leader in observing how children learn and creating materials based on this information. There is a glass case that houses a selection of antique Montessori materials.

Several of the exhibits brought back memories of my childhood: a Slinky, Legos, board games, and the first Barbie Doll House. I learned that Legos originated in Denmark in 1947. It was also interesting to see how various wars affected children’s art, depictions and clothing. The exhibit opens to the public on July 29 and runs through November 5, 2012.
