Riverside Montessori School
Riverside Montessori is located at 93rd Street and Riverside Drive, a stone’s throw from Riverside Park. The school is accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES) and is an affiliate school of Columbia University. All our lead teachers are Montessori certified and have training in early childhood education.
Infant Teaching Teams
Ada joined Twin Parks in 2009. She has been working with young children for over 16 years and enjoys all professional development workshops. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Ada has experience working in our infant, toddler and early childhood classrooms and brings enthusiasm and warmth to our community. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
Dian joined Riverside Montessori School in October 2015 as a substitute teacher and worked full time in the summer 2016 program. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Management from Trisakti University in Indonesia. Dian has several years experience working as a childcare provider and is mom to two children. She has a gentle, calm presence and can often be seen smiling!
Annie Mai is originally from Ireland; she came to the United States in 1988. Before joining Riverside Montessori in 1999, Annie Mai worked with children ranging from toddlers to preschoolers. Annie Mai completed a Montessori training course. She has been with our infant program for over ten years!
Sandy joined Riverside Montessori in 2007. She holds Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Sandy has worked in all age groups and joined the Green Room as a Co-Lead Teacher in June 2015. She is an avid runner and has completed several marathons.
Elizabeth joined Riverside Montessori School in 2014. She has a Bachelor’s degree with a major in English from Quinnipiac University. She earned a Master’s degree with a major in Early Childhood Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She brings seven years experience-teaching children from 18 months to five years of age. She offers a strong focus on utilizing a Creative Curriculum and emphasizes creating a responsive classroom environment that reflects each child’s unique abilities and interests. She also aims to create a classroom that nurtures social emotional awareness and strong relationships.
Ami joined Riverside Montessori School in 2013. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts from City College. Her experience working with children includes assisting teaching in an early childhood program, volunteer work in a weekend program and tutoring older children. Prior to joining Riverside she worked as a Patient Care Health Home Aide.
Toddler Teaching Teams
Louise has worked at Twin Parks since 2009. She is a certified Infant/Toddler Montessori teacher. She holds a B.A. in Human Resource Management from South Hampton Solent University in the United Kingdom. Before coming to Twin Parks Montessori Schools, she worked as a substitute teacher with children ages 6 months to 5 years. Mom to two wonderful children, she is thrilled to have them both attend Riverside this fall!
Vicki has been teaching at Riverside Montessori since 2000. Throughout her career as an assistant teacher, she has worked with children ranging in age from three months to 24 months. Vicki enjoys designing her Montessori home for her son!
Bushra joined Twin Parks Montessori in 2015 as a substitute teacher. She earned a BFA from the National College of Arts, Lahore and has a strong background in computer graphic design. Bushra has 12 years experience working with children including five years as an Art Teacher at the Scarsdale International School.
Cornelia “Corny” is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher and completed her CDA (Child Development Associate) Degree at Touro College. She has been a teacher at Riverside Montessori since the school opened in 1997 and is an expert at classroom design and toddler curriculum.
Laura holds a BFA in Photography and is passionate about photography art. She enjoys working with children and traveled to Taiwan to teach English as a second language to 4-16yr olds. Laura also studied Spanish in Bogota, Columbia. She spent several months in a kindergarten classroom in Texas as an Assistant Teacher. Laura began substituting at Riverside Montessori School in October and worked as a full time assistant teacher in the 2016 summer program. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities.
Myriam has worked with toddlers in Montessori environments since 1997, and worked in the public school system for four years. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Myriam received her Child Development Associate credential from Touro College. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
Rebecca originally from Kentucky, joined Twin Parks Montessori Schools in 2015. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Georgetown College, Kentucky. She earned her American Montessori Society (AMS) Infant/Toddler Credential from the Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY in 2015 and her AMS Early Childhood Credential from the Greater Cincinnati Center in 2012. She taught in a toddler Montessori School in White Plains and an Early Childhood Montessori School in Georgetown Kentucky. Rebecca is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She is thrilled to have her daughter join Riverside this fall in the infant class!
Paulette joined Riverside Montessori School in 2015 and worked in both the older infant and toddler programs. She was born in Puerto Rico where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and has lived abroad, including Spain and Mexico, where she received her Art Psychotherapist and Equine Therapy Credentials. Paulette has been passionately working with children, including those with special needs, for over 20 years providing counseling and supportive therapies. She completed her Montessori Teacher Training (AMS/MACTE) in June 2015 and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities.
Joanna is a Montessori certified teacher in Infant and Toddler from CMTE Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2008. She enjoys spending time with her family and is excited about to her daughter attend Riverside this fall in our older infant class!
Carolyn joined Riverside Montessori in 2012. She holds her Montessori credential for infants and toddlers and has been a lead Montessori teacher for the past 7 years. She attended St. Joseph’s College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She has over ten years of experience working with children from birth to 6 years and is a Youth Leader and Music Director for children 11-18 years old.
Shane joined Riverside Montessori School in September 2016. He is originally from Bronx, New York and has a strong background in field sports with collegiate experience in track & field and football. He previously worked at Playgarden NYC from 2010 as a Sports Instructor and Lead Teacher for their Pre-School Program. He specializes in Gymnastics and Sports Skills Development. In June 2015 Shane began the CME Montessori Infant/Toddler Teacher Education Program and will complete his internship this year.
Michelle joined Riverside Montessori School as an Assistant Teacher in 2016. Prior to that she worked as a substitute teacher at our Park West Montessori School. Michelle is fluent in English and Spanish.
Veronica is an RN and a Montessori Certified Infant/ Toddler Teacher. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2005 and has been a lead teacher for both the infant and toddler classrooms. Veronica’s warmth is shared with all who come in contact with her. Veronica is an expert at designing classroom toddler activities and offers suggestions to parents on creating Montessori spaces in the home. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
Andrea joined Riverside Montessori School in 2006. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Hunter College. Andrea speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English fluently and completed her ESL training at the Spanish American Institute to teach English as a second language. She is currently working on her CME/NY Infant Toddler Montessori training.
Lis joined Riverside Montessori in 2007 as a substitute teacher and became a full time classroom teacher in 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and speaks both Indonesian and English.
Early Childhood Teaching Teams
Sarah has been an Early Childhood teacher in the Red Room since 2007. She has a Masters in Educational Theatre from New York University and completed her Montessori certification from CMTE/NY in 2009. Sarah presented a workshop on using dramatic activities in the classroom at the American Montessori Society conference in Los Angeles and is always looking for ways to connect the arts to the curriculum. While in grad school she facilitated drama workshops for students and communities in both London and Brazil. Sarah teaches after school music and creative movement enrichment. Her son will start his third year at RMS this fall and it has been a joy to see him grow and develop in the Montessori method!
Victoria holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College in English Language Arts with a Minor in Psychology. She worked as a professional childcare provider for the past ten years and is fluent in both English and Spanish. Victoria joined Riverside in January 2015 and is currently working on her Montessori (AMS) training in Early Childhood.
Lauren joined Riverside Montessori in 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from New England College. Her experience includes working as an assistant teacher in a 2nd grade classrooms at Whitby School in CT, and assisting in both summer camps and an afterschool program in a Montessori school. Lauren will begin her (AMS) Montessori training in Early Childhood this fall.
Jillian received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at SUNY and her Master’s in Early Childhood Literacy at Hunter College. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2010 and has focused on science and literacy curriculum for the classroom and after school enrichment program. She completed her American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Childhood training at the Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY in 2014.
Jeff holds a BA from Empire State College and is currently enrolled in the Early Childhood Master’s Program at Concordia College. He is an Early Childhood Montessori Certified (AMS) teacher. Jeff is a father to two wonderful boys, both who attended Riverside Montessori. He is a vibrant and outgoing individual who enjoys composing songs with his class and executing large project based activities.
Denise is originally from the Island of Jamaica and came to NYC in 1987. She attended the College of Staten Island where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2004. She also completed the Teacher Assistant/Childcare Provider in 2007. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2009 and completed her AMS Montessori Certification in spring 2013. Denise is currently enrolled in a Masters Program at Concordia College in early Childhood Education.
Valerie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Scranton and a Master in Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Language and Literacy from Arizona State University. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2012 and completed her Montessori certification in Spring 2013 from New England Montessori Teacher Education Center in Boston. Her passion for Early Childhood is evident in her nine years as an educator, advocating for early intervention, and peace and community in the classroom. When not in the classroom, she enjoys preparing (and eating) traditional Filipino dishes from her family recipes. She also makes time to visit her family in Arizona. She’s excited for another wonderful year in the Aqua Room!
Faith joined Twin Parks in 2015. She is originally from Nairobi, Kenya where she explored many different pursuits. She was a safari leader, a florist and a jewelry designer. In 2006, she discovered the Montessori method and enrolled in an intensive course of Montessori education at Montessori Centre International in London. She has taught at the Montessori International School and Battery Park Montessori/Green Ivy School. When she’s not in the classroom, Faith loves spending time in Central Park with her family and cooking Sunday brunches with her son Hayden.
Elizabeth joined Twin Parks in September 2015. She recently completed Princeton Montessori’s Leadership Course. She earned her American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Childhood Credential from Christopher Academy. This is her 11th year teaching. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Misericordia University and a Masters Degree in Montessori Education from Chaminade University. Elizabeth has experience in coordinating After School Programs at the Schools she has worked at, and Summer Programs for terminally ill children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and relaxing down at the shore.
Xixi is a third generation early childhood teacher and grew up in her mother and aunt’s Montessori schools in China; the first and largest chain in Hainan Island. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Technology from Tianjin University of Commerce and completed her She is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, is an avid practitioner of meditation and qi-gong, and teaches Chinese folk dance. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2015.
Elika joined Riverside Montessori in 2015 and is a Certified (AMS) Montessori Early Childhood Teacher. His experience includes teaching physical education for ten years at The Children’s Storefront School and a Lead Teacher role at the Ricardo O’Gorman Garden School for five years, both located in Harlem, NY. He enjoys cooking, horticulture and poetry.
Dr. Kathy Roemer, immediate past president of the American Montessori Society (AMS), has over 30 years experience as a Montessori teacher, director and consultant. She joined the AMS Board of Directors in 2006 and has served as the vice president of the Board of Directors since 2008 and president from 2011-13. Dr. Roemer was a charter member of the AMS School Accreditation Commission, and chaired the Commission for four years.
She began her career as an educator in 1985 when she was researching a preschool for one of her sons. After learning about the Montessori method, she realized it was a perfect match for her family—and a perfect match for her career ambitions.
Dr. Roemer earned a Doctorate in education from the University of Memphis; a Masters degree in Montessori education from Christian Brothers University in Memphis; and a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology and archeology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She is certified as an early childhood Montessori teacher and holds a certificate for advanced professional education from the AMS. She is also a licensed New York State teacher for birth to 2nd grade students.
From 1995 to 2004, she held the position of Head of School at Lamplighter Montessori School in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Kathy Roemer joined Twin Parks Montessori Schools in August 2004, as the executive director and has grown Twin Parks into the largest accredited Montessori program in Manhattan and the only infant-toddler program in New York State to be accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES).
Dr. Roemer is an international speaker on topics such as Generational Indicators for Planning Professional Development, Progress Report Development, Qualities of a Montessori Teacher, Executive Function Skills, and Support for Emerging Leaders. Her most recent public speaking events include the Quality of Life Conference in NYC 2015, AIMS Conference in Chicago, 2015, Montessori in Asia Conference, Beijing 2011 and Singapore 2012, Association of Illinois Montessori Schools, Chicago 2015, American Montessori Society Conference, Orlando, FL 2013, Dallas, TX, 2014 and Philadelphia, PA 2015. Dr. Roemer is an instructor for the school management program at the Center for Montessori Education in New Rochelle, NY.
Kathy’s hobbies include reading, attending theater and movies, and water color painting.
Candace LaDouceur joined Riverside Montessori in 2006 as Educational Director and oversees admissions and exmissions. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from SUNY and a Master’s Degree from St. John’s University and holds NYS N-6 Permanent Certification. Candace is also Montessori Certified and taught for over ten years in a NYC Montessori school. Her experience also includes teaching for a Montessori Teacher Education Program and various other educational administrative roles.
James Scott is a graduate of Purdue University, IN. and has a BS in Aviation Technology.One of James’ strengths is customer service and employee relations. He has experience in large corporations as well as hotels and as a vault teller at the Alpine Bank in Aspen, Colorado. Most recently James was the site manager for City Medical of Union Square, an urgent care facility. He was responsible for daily operations and staffing.
Gloria D’Onofrio joined Riverside in 2011 as our administrative assistant. She previously worked as a receptionist at a law firm for several years. Gloria is excited to have her daughter begin the toddler program this fall!
