Riverside Montessori School

Riverside Montessori is located at 93rd Street and Riverside Drive, a stone’s throw from Riverside Park. The school is accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES) and is an affiliate school of Columbia University. All our lead teachers are Montessori certified and have training in early childhood education.

Infant Teaching Teams

Yellow Room

Ada joined Twin Parks in 2009. She has been working with young children for over 16 years and enjoys all professional development workshops. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Ada has experience working in our infant, toddler and early childhood classrooms and brings enthusiasm and warmth to our community. She is fluent in Spanish and English.

Dian joined Riverside Montessori School in October 2015. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Management from Trisakti University in Indonesia. Dian has several years experience working as a childcare provider and is mom to two children. She has a gentle, calm presence and can often be seen smiling!

Myriam has worked with toddlers in Montessori environments since 1997, and worked in the public school system for four years. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Myriam received her Child Development Associate credential from Touro College. She is fluent in Spanish and English.

Green Room

Liana joined Twin Parks in Fall 2017. She holds a Masters degree in Early Childhood General and Special Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Bachelors degree in Art History from Goucher College. She previously worked as an assistant infant teacher since 2015. Liana enjoys photography and maintains a daily yoga practice.

Joanna is a Montessori certified teacher in Infant and Toddler from CMTE Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2008.

Wendolyn joined Riverside Montessori in Fall 2017. She previously worked at our Central Park campus and Park West campus from 2007-2013. More recently Wendolyn held a lead teacher position at Williamsburg Montessori School. She is an AMS Infant-Toddler certified Montessori teacher. She has an Associates Degree in Hospitality Managements and is currently working on her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Asworth College.

Silver

Louise has worked at Twin Parks since 2009. She is a certified Infant/Toddler Montessori teacher. She holds a B.A. in Human Resource Management from South Hampton Solent University in the United Kingdom. Before coming to Twin Parks Montessori Schools, she worked as a substitute teacher with children ages 6 months to 5 years.

Andrea joined Riverside Montessori School in 2006. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Hunter College and is a certified AMS Montessori Infant-Toddler teacher. Andrea speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English fluently and completed her ESL training at the Spanish American Institute to teach English as a second language.

Ami joined the Riverside Montessori School in 2013. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts from City College and will start her Infant/Toddler Montessori training Fall 2017. Her experiences includes assisting teaching in an early childhood program, weekend program, and Ami has also volunteered as a Team Leader in a non-profit organization, Rice Grains Inc., with the Youth program (10-19yrs old) distributing food and fundraised to provide care packages to those in need. Prior to joining Riverside, Ami worked as a Patient Care – Health Home Aide provider.

Toddler Teaching Teams

Brown Room

Mindy joined Riverside Montessori School in Fall 2017 and has been with our Park West Montessori campus since 2008. She has a Bachelors Degree from John Jay College and received her AMS Infant/Toddler Montessori certification at the Center for Montessori Education (CME) in June 2016. Mindy has worked at the New York Public Library, been a nanny and enjoys reading and going to the gym in her spare time. Over the years she has grown more and more passionate working with younger children, “it is amazing to have the opportunity of being in a child’s life and being able to guide them and see them flourish.

Annie Mai joined Riverside Montessori in 1999 as an assistant teacher. Before joining us Annie Mai worked with children ranging from toddlers to preschoolers. With over 20 years of experience she continues to broaden and apply her education by attending numerous workshops and professional development courses. She currently holds a International Montessori Teaching Diploma and has a great passion for what she does. She is originally from Ireland and came to the United States in 1988. She has two children, enjoys walking in the park with her dog, and playing tennis in the Summer months.

Michelle joined Riverside Montessori School as an Assistant Teacher in 2016.  Prior to that she worked as a substitute teacher at the Park West Montessori School for 2 1/2 yrs. Before teaching, Michelle worked in a medical field office. She is mother of two young ladies and enjoys traveling and listening to music. She is pursuing a CDA (Child Development Associate Credential).  Michelle is fluent in English and Spanish.

Coral Room

Paulette joined Riverside Montessori School in 2015 and worked in both the older infant and toddler programs. She was born in Puerto Rico where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and has lived abroad, including Spain and Mexico, where she received her Art Psychotherapist and Equine Therapy Credentials. Paulette is a certified AMS Montessori Infant-Toddler teacher and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities. Paulette has been passionately working with children, including those with special needs, for over 20 years providing counseling and supportive therapies.

Vicki has been teaching at Riverside Montessori since 2000. Throughout her career as an assistant teacher, she has worked with children ranging in age from three months to 24 months. Vicki enjoys designing her Montessori home for her son!

Gail has been at Riverside Montessori since 1998. She completed her Master’s Degree in education from Hunter College in 2004. She is a NYS certified teacher with experience in all age groups at Riverside Montessori. She spent the past two summers in London where she continues her AMI Montessori teacher certification.

Aqua Room

Corny is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher and completed her CDA (Child Development Associate) Degree at Touro College. She is currently working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Corny has been a teacher at Riverside Montessori since the school opened in 1997 and is an expert at classroom design and toddler curriculum.

Sandy joined Riverside Montessori in 2007. She holds Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania. She is a certified Montessori CME/NY (AMS) Infant Toddler teacher. Sandy has worked in all age groups at Riverside Montessori School. She is an avid runner and has completed several marathons.

Lis joined the Riverside Montessori School in 2007 as a substitute teacher and became a full time classroom teacher in 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the State University of Padang in Indonesia. Lis enjoys teaching and having opportunities to watch children grow and flourish very much. She has been teaching every Saturday in Indonesian community, Long Island City, Queens, NY since 1997 until present. Lis joined the CME Montessori Infant /Toddler Teacher Education Program in the summer of 2017.

Orange Room

Shane joined Riverside Montessori School in September 2016. He is an AMS Infant-Toddler Montessori Certified Teacher. Originally from Bronx, New York, he has a strong background in field sports with collegiate experience in track & field and football. He previously worked at Playgarden NYC from 2010 as a Sports Instructor and Lead Teacher for their Pre-School Program. He specializes in Gymnastics and Sports Skills Development.

Evangeline joined Riverside Montessori School in Fall 2017. She completed her AMS Montessori Infant/Toddler certification from PCTE (Princeton Center for Teacher Education) in 2003. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Centro Escolar University in the Philippines. Evangeline has been passionately working with young children in different Montessori Schools in New York City as a Toddler teacher for the past 18 years.

Mary earned her Bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in 2006 with a double major in History and Spanish. Shortly afterwards she became a TEFL/TESOL-certified teacher and taught English to children, teens, and adults in Madrid, Spain. She has worked as an assistant Kindergarten and assistant pre-K teacher at the Saint Stephen of Hungary School on the Upper East Side, as well as in admissions at Prep for Prep, an educational nonprofit organization on the Upper West Side. In her free time Mary loves reading mystery novels, practicing yoga, and cooking.

Purple Room

Jeanny joined Riverside Montessori School in September 2017. She was born and raised in NYC. Jeanny holds a M.A in Early Childhood Special Education with an extension in Bilingual Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is fluent in English and Spanish. She has her AMS (American Montessori Society) certification at the Infant and Toddler level from CME-NY and is currently finishing her Montessori AMS certification at the Early Childhood level. She has her permanent New York State teaching license in Early Childhood and Special Education (Birth-2nd Grade). Jeanny developed a passion for teaching at a very young age and has been part of the education field for 15 years working with children from 15 months-8 years old in different school settings. She is a proud mother of three children ages 7, 3 and 4 months old and is excited to have her 3 years old son and 4 months old daughter attend Twin Parks this September. On my spare time she enjoys spending time with my family and visiting parks, museums, libraries and restaurants.

Faith joined Twin Parks in 2015. She is originally from Nairobi, Kenya where she explored many different pursuits. She was a safari leader, a florist and a jewelry designer. In 2006, she discovered the Montessori method and enrolled in an intensive course of Montessori education at Montessori Centre International in London. She has taught at the Montessori International School and Battery Park Montessori/Green Ivy School. When she’s not in the classroom, Faith loves spending time in Central Park with her family and cooking Sunday brunches with her son Hayden.

Gregory is thrilled to be joining the RMS team in the fall of 2017! He holds a B.A. from Empire State College, and has taught at Sugar Hill Museum Preschool and Dorothy Day Early Childhood Center for the past three years. He serves as Director of Performing Arts at Gate Hill Day Camp, where he leads the Forest Fables early literacy program, writes and directs musicals, and encourages children to raise their voices with purpose. A firm believer in the powers of storytelling and the performing arts, Gregory will teach theatre and literacy for the Early Childhood Enrichment program. When not working with children and families, Gregory can be found in Harlem weaving original stories and watercolor painting in the company of partner Jason and cat Duncan.

Early Childhood Teaching Teams

Red Room

Sarah has been an Early Childhood teacher at Riverside since 2007. She has her Montessori certification (ages 3-6) from CMTE/NY, an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University and an MA in Early Childhood Education from The College of New Rochelle. Sarah presented a workshop on using dramatic activities in the classroom at the American Montessori Society conference in Los Angeles and is always looking for ways to connect the arts to the curriculum. While in grad school she facilitated drama workshops for students and communities in both London and Brazil. Her son will start his fourth year at RMS this fall and it has been a joy to see him grow and develop in the Montessori method!

Denise joined Riverside Montessori School is 2009 and is a certified AMS Montessori Teacher. She is originally from the Island of Jamaica and came to NYC in 1987. She attended the College of Staten Island where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2004.. Denise is currently enrolled in a Masters Program at Concordia College in early Childhood Education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities.

Lauren joined the Riverside Montessori in September 2012. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from New England College, Henniker, New Hampshire. Prior to working at the Riverside Montessori, Lauren had the opportunity to student teach at the Bedford school in Pleasantville, and worked closely as an assistant in the second grade for the Whitby School in Greenwich, Ct. She spent many summers as a camp counselor for different age groups both boys and girls. Lauren volunteers at the Humane Society for dogs and cats, located in Manhattan. She enjoys music, marathon races, kayaking, reading, and rock climbing.  Lauren is currently working on her Early Childhood AMS Montessori Certification.

Rainbow Room

Alicia joined Riverside Montessori School in Fall 2017 and has been at our Park West Montessori campus since 2008. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Masters of Arts in Education from Goucher College. Alicia earned her AMS Early Childhood Certification from the Center for Montessori Studies in Maryland. Before coming to Park West, Alicia taught for 6 years at a Montessori school in Maryland. In addition to classroom teaching, Alicia has been our Music enrichment teacher for many years. Alicia is mother of twin boys who keep her busy and full of joy!

Victoria joined Riverside in January 2015 and completed her Montessori certification from WSMS-TEP in June 2017. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College in English Language Arts with a Minor in Psychology. She worked as a professional childcare provider for ten years and is fluent in both English and Spanish. Victoria enjoys creating art projects, listening to music, and spending time with her husband and family.

Laura holds a BFA in Photography and is passionate about the arts. She enjoys working with children and traveled to Taiwan to teach English as a second language to 4-16yr olds.  Laura also studied Spanish in Bogota, Colombia. She spent several months in a kindergarten classroom in Texas as an Assistant Teacher. Laura began working at Riverside Montessori School in October 2016, first as a Substitute Teacher and then last year as an Assistant Teacher. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as her Early Childhood Montessori Training.

Gold Room

Elizabeth joined Twin Parks in September 2015 and is Certified (AMS) Montessori Teacher. She completed her Montessori Leadership Certification from Princeton Montessori. This will be her 13th year teaching! She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Misericordia University and a Masters Degree in Montessori Education from Chaminade University. Elizabeth has experience in coordinating After School Programs at the Schools she has worked at and coordinates Summer Programs annually for terminally ill children. Outside of school, she volunteers her time to help support Girl Power 2 Cure, a foundation to help end Rett Syndrome. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband a Montessori elementary teacher and their rescue Pit-bull, relaxing down the shore and out in the Poconos.

Elika joined Riverside Montessori in 2015 and is a Certified (AMS) Montessori Early Childhood Teacher. He holds a BA with a minor in Psychology from The Colleges of New Rochelle. His experience includes teaching physical education for ten years at The Children’s Storefront School and a Lead Teacher role at the Ricardo O’Gorman Garden School for five years, both located in Harlem, NY. He enjoys cooking, horticulture and poetry.

Gabriela joined Riverside Montessori School in January 2017. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College in Childhood Education with a concentration in Bilingual Education.  She is currently working towards her AMS Montessori Certification. She has held Assistant and Co-Lead Teacher positions at two early childhood program in the downtown NYC area. Additional formal classroom experiences involved student teaching internships in two separate public schools in Brooklyn.

Administrative Team

Dr. Kathy Roemer, immediate past president of the American Montessori Society (AMS), has over 30 years experience as a Montessori teacher, director and consultant. She joined the AMS Board of Directors in 2006 and has served as the vice president of the Board of Directors since 2008 and president from 2011-13. Dr. Roemer was a charter member of the AMS School Accreditation Commission, and chaired the Commission for four years.

She began her career as an educator in 1985 when she was researching a preschool for one of her sons. After learning about the Montessori method, she realized it was a perfect match for her family—and a perfect match for her career ambitions.
Dr. Roemer earned a Doctorate in education from the University of Memphis; a Masters degree in Montessori education from Christian Brothers University in Memphis; and a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology and archeology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She is certified as an early childhood Montessori teacher and holds a certificate for advanced professional education from the AMS. She is also a licensed New York State teacher for birth to 2nd grade students.

From 1995 to 2004, she held the position of Head of School at Lamplighter Montessori School in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Kathy Roemer joined Twin Parks Montessori Schools in August 2004, as the executive director and has grown Twin Parks into the largest accredited Montessori program in Manhattan and the only infant-toddler program in New York State to be accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES).

Dr. Roemer is an international speaker on topics such as Generational Indicators for Planning Professional Development, Progress Report Development, Qualities of a Montessori Teacher, Executive Function Skills, and Support for Emerging Leaders. Her most recent public speaking events include the Quality of Life Conference in NYC 2015, AIMS Conference in Chicago, 2015, Montessori in Asia Conference, Beijing 2011 and Singapore 2012, Association of Illinois Montessori Schools, Chicago 2015, American Montessori Society Conference, Orlando, FL 2013, Dallas, TX, 2014 and Philadelphia, PA 2015. Dr. Roemer is an instructor for the school management program at the Center for Montessori Education in New Rochelle, NY.

Kathy’s hobbies include reading, attending theater and movies, and water color painting.

Jenna joined Riverside Montessori in 2006 as a Lead Toddler Teacher and in 2014 became the school’s Infant & Toddler Coordinator. Jenna recently launched The Nurture Center, Twin Park’s newest program for infants and toddlers. She holds two Masters Degrees from Bank Street of Education in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood School Leadership and completed her Infant/Toddler Montessori Certification in 2009 from CMTE/NY. During the summer Jenna runs a program training teenagers to work with children at a summer camp in Massachusetts and facilitating workings about issues of social justice.

Candace LaDouceur joined Riverside Montessori in 2006 as Educational Director and oversees admissions and exmissions. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from SUNY and a Master’s Degree from St. John’s University and holds NYS N-6 Permanent Certification. Candace is also Montessori Certified and taught for over ten years in a NYC Montessori school. Her experience also includes teaching for a Montessori Teacher Education Program and various other educational administrative roles.

James Scott is a graduate of Purdue University, IN. and has a BS in Aviation Technology.One of James’ strengths is customer service and employee relations. He has experience in large corporations as well as hotels and as a vault teller at the Alpine Bank in Aspen, Colorado. Most recently James was the site manager for City Medical of Union Square, an urgent care facility. He was responsible for daily operations and staffing.

Gloria D’Onofrio joined Riverside in 2011 as our administrative assistant. She previously worked as a receptionist at a law firm for several years. Gloria is excited to have her daughter begin the toddler program this fall!
