Riverside Montessori School
Riverside Montessori is located at 93rd Street and Riverside Drive, a stone’s throw from Riverside Park. The school is accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES) and is an affiliate school of Columbia University. All our lead teachers are Montessori certified and have training in early childhood education.
Infant Teaching Teams
Ada joined Twin Parks in 2009. She has been working with young children for over 16 years and enjoys all professional development workshops as she is currently enrolled in CME/NY Infant Toddler Montessori training. Ada has experience working in our infant, toddler and early childhood classrooms and brings enthusiasm and warmth to our community.
Andrea joined Riverside Montessori School in 2006. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Hunter College. Andrea speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English fluently and completed her ESL training at the Spanish American Institute to teach English as a second language.
Annie Mai is originally from Ireland; she came to the United States in 1988. Before joining Riverside Montessori in 1999, Annie Mai worked with children ranging from toddlers to preschoolers. Annie Mai completed a Montessori training course. She has been with our infant program for over ten years.
Louise has worked at Twin Parks since 2009. She is a certified Infant/Toddler Montessori teacher. She holds a B.A. in Human Resource Management from South Hampton Solent University in the United Kingdom. Before coming to Twin Parks Montessori Schools, she worked as a substitute teacher with children ages 6 months to 5 years.
Paulette was born in Puerto Rico where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and has lived abroad, including Spain and Mexico, where she received her Art Psychotherapist and Equine Therapy Credentials. Paulette has been passionately working with children, including those with special needs, for over 20 years providing counseling and supportive therapies. She has lived in Miami these last two years, and has just finished her Montessori Teacher Training (AMS/MACTE) at Village Montessori Training Center, where she also worked as an Assistant Teacher for the last year.
Ami holds a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts from City College. Her experience working with children includes assisting teaching in an early childhood program, volunteer work in a weekend program and tutoring older children. Prior to joining Riverside she worked as a Patient Care Health Home Aide.
Toddler Teaching Teams
Veronica is an RN and a Montessori Certified Infant/ Toddler Teacher. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2005 and has been a lead teacher for both the infant and toddler classrooms. Veronica’s warmth is shared with all who come in contact with her.
Vicki has been teaching at Riverside Montessori since 2000. Throughout her career as an assistant teacher, she has worked with children ranging in age from three months to 24 months. Vicki enjoys designing her Montessori home for her son!
Lis joined Riverside Montessori in 2007 as a substitute teacher and became a full time classroom teacher in 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and speaks both Indonesian and English.
Cornelia is a Montessori Certified Teacher and has completed her CDA (Child Development Associate) Degree from Touro College. She has been a teacher at Riverside Montessori since the school opened in 1997.
Gail has been at Riverside Montessori since 1998. She completed her Master’s Degree in education from Hunter College in 2004. She is a NYS certified teacher with experience in all age groups at Riverside Montessori. She spent the past two summers in London where she continues her AMI Montessori teacher certification.
Rita holds a diploma from Tarakanita Secretarial Academy in Indonesia. She held various child care provider positions in New York City since 2001 before becoming a full-time Riverside substitute in Fall of 2013. This will be Rita’s second year in the Blue Room.
Mary received her Bachelor of Arts from The College of New Jersey in May 2012 majoring in Psychology and has been involved in many volunteer experiences with children. She has worked in summer camps—including Park West and in the Chester N J school District. She received her AMS Infant/Toddler Credential in June 2014 from the WSMS Montessori Teacher Education Program. She completed the St. Catherine’s Montessori Master’s program in June 2015. She loves outdoor active sports especially hiking and kayaking.
Elizabeth has a Bachelor’s degree with a major in English from Quinnipiac University. She earned a Master’s degree with a major in Early Childhood Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She brings seven years experience teaching children from 18 months to five years of age. She offers a strong focus on utilizing a Creative Curriculum and emphasizes creating a responsive classroom environment that reflects each child’s unique abilities and interests. She also aims to create a classroom that nurtures social emotional awareness and strong relationships.
Myriam has worked with toddlers in Montessori environments since 1997, and worked in the public school system for four years. She received her infant/toddler AMS Montessori certification at CMTE/NY. Myriam received her Child Development Associate credential from Touro College.
Carolyn joined Riverside Montessori in 2012. She holds her Montessori credential for infants and toddlers and has been a lead Montessori teacher for the past 7 years. She attended St. Joseph’s College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She has over ten years of experience working with children from birth to 6 years and is a Youth Leader and Music Director for children 11-18 years old.
Rebecca originally from Kentucky, joined Twin Parks Montessori Schools in 2015. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Georgetown College, Kentucky. She earned her American Montessori Society (AMS) Infant/Toddler Credential from the Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY in 2015 and her AMS Early Childhood Credential from the Greater Cincinnati Center in 2012. She taught in a toddler Montessori School in White Plains and an Early Childhood Montessori School in Georgetown Kentucky. Rebecca is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood.
Joanna is a Montessori certified teacher in Infant and Toddler from CMTE Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2008. She enjoys spending time with her family and is excited about her first baby.
Jenna, our Infant/Toddler Coordinator, joined Riverside Montessori in 2006. She received her Infant and Toddler Montessori Certification from CMTE. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Psychology from Rutgers University and a Master’s Degree from Bank Street College in Early Childhood Education birth to second grade. Jenna is currently working on a second Masters in Educational Leadership at Bank Street.
Sandy joined Riverside Montessori in 2007. She has her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Drexel University and she is currently enrolled in CME/NY Infant Toddler Montessori training.
Roxanne completed her American Montessori Society (AMS) Infant/Toddler training at WSMS-TEP/NY in June 2014. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Communications and Asian Studies from Manhattanville College. Roxanne is fluent in Hungarian and proficient in Spanish and Japanese.
Early Childhood Teaching Teams
Sarah has been an Early Childhood teacher in the Red Room since 2007. She has a Masters in Educational Theatre from New York University and completed her Montessori certification from CMTE/NY in 2009. Sarah presented a workshop on using dramatic activities in the classroom at the American Montessori Society conference in Los Angeles and is always looking for ways to connect the arts to the curriculum. While in grad school she facilitated drama workshops for students and communities in both London and Brazil. Sarah teaches after school music and creative movement enrichment. Her son will start his second year at RMS this fall and it has been a joy to see him grow and develop in the Montessori method!
Denise is originally from the Island of Jamaica and came to NYC in 1987. She attended the College of Staten Island where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2004. She also completed the Teacher Assistant/Childcare Provider in 2007. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2009 and completed her AMS Montessori Certification in spring 2013. Denise is currently enrolled in a Masters at Concordia College.
Victoria holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College in English Language Arts with a Minor in Psychology. She worked as a professional child care provider for the past ten years and is fluent in both English and Spanish. Victoria joined Riverside in January 2015.
Jillian received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at SUNY and her Master’s in Early Childhood Literacy at Hunter College. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2010 and has focused on science and literacy curriculum for the classroom and after school enrichment program. She completed her American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Childhood training at the Center for Montessori Teacher Education/NY in 2014. Jillian is looking forward to her fall wedding!
Vanita joined Twin Parks in 2015. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Childhood Education and Psychology from The City College of New York in 2013 and completed her Montessori certification from West Side Montessori-Teachers Education Program in 2015. She was accepted and will matriculate into the Curriculum and Instruction Master’s program at Bank Street College of Education next Fall. Vanita is a second-generation teacher who has grown up wanting to help children become their best, most confident, most self-reliant selves. She taught science to students from kindergarten through sixth grades for one year in a public school and worked at Pine Street Montessori School while completing her Montessori certification.
Joana originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, received a BFA in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of Visual Arts, New York. She co-founded the Things Spaces Salon, a monthly event that serves as a platform for artists to present and develop their work. She has taught at Gallery North’s children’s art program called ArtVentures, and at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Joana is the Co-Founder/Art Teacher for Upstairs at 83, a non-profit organization that provides children art education in the Lower East Side. Most recently Joana taught at a Reggio Emilia inspired Nursery School.
Valerie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Language and Literacy. She has five years of experience teaching Grades K- 8. She joined Riverside Montessori in 2012 and completed her Montessori certification in Spring 2013.
Cheryl has a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Psychology from Illinois State University. She received her Early Childhood Montessori certification in 2010. She previously worked as an assistant teacher at West Side Montessori School and a substitute teacher at our Twin Parks Central Park campus. Prior to exploring the world of Montessori, Cheryl worked in the Entertainment industry both in Los Angeles and here in NYC.
Elizabeth joined Twin Parks in September 2015. She recently completed Princeton Montessori’s Leadership Course. She earned her American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Childhood Credential from Christopher Academy. This is her 11th year teaching. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Misericordia University and a Masters Degree in Montessori Education from Chaminade University. Elizabeth has experience in coordinating After School Programs at the Schools she has worked at, and Summer Programs for terminally ill children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and relaxing down at the shore.
Faith joined Twin Parks in 2015. She is originally from Nairobi, Kenya where she explored many different pursuits. She was a safari leader, a florist and a jewelry designer. In 2006, she discovered the Montessori method and enrolled in an intensive course of Montessori education at Montessori Centre International in London. She has taught at the Montessori International School and Battery Park Montessori/Green Ivy School. When she’s not in the classroom, Faith loves spending time in Central Park with her family and cooking Sunday brunches with her son Hayden.
Lauren joined Riverside Montessori in 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from New England College. Her experience includes working as an assistant teacher in a 2nd grade classrooms at Whitby School in CT, and assisting in both summer camps and an afterschool program in a Montessori school.
Dr. Kathy Roemer, immediate past president of the American Montessori Society (AMS), has over 30 years experience as a Montessori teacher, director and consultant. She joined the AMS Board of Directors in 2006 and has served as the vice president of the Board of Directors since 2008 and president from 2011-13. Dr. Roemer was a charter member of the AMS School Accreditation Commission, and chaired the Commission for four years.
She began her career as an educator in 1985 when she was researching a preschool for one of her sons. After learning about the Montessori method, she realized it was a perfect match for her family—and a perfect match for her career ambitions.
Dr. Roemer earned a Doctorate in education from the University of Memphis; a Masters degree in Montessori education from Christian Brothers University in Memphis; and a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology and archeology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She is certified as an early childhood Montessori teacher and holds a certificate for advanced professional education from the AMS. She is also a licensed New York State teacher for birth to 2nd grade students.
From 1995 to 2004, she held the position of Head of School at Lamplighter Montessori School in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Kathy Roemer joined Twin Parks Montessori Schools in August 2004, as the executive director and has grown Twin Parks into the largest accredited Montessori program in Manhattan and the only infant-toddler program in New York State to be accredited by both the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES).
Dr. Roemer is an international speaker on topics such as Generational Indicators for Planning Professional Development, Progress Report Development, Qualities of a Montessori Teacher, Executive Function Skills, and Support for Emerging Leaders. Her most recent public speaking events include the Quality of Life Conference in NYC 2015, AIMS Conference in Chicago, 2015, Montessori in Asia Conference, Beijing 2011 and Singapore 2012, Association of Illinois Montessori Schools, Chicago 2015, American Montessori Society Conference, Orlando, FL 2013, Dallas, TX, 2014 and Philadelphia, PA 2015. Dr. Roemer is an instructor for the school management program at the Center for Montessori Education in New Rochelle, NY. Kathy’s hobbies include reading, attending theater and movies, and water color painting.
Candace LaDouceur joined Riverside Montessori in 2006 as Educational Director and oversees admissions and exmissions. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from SUNY and a Master’s Degree from St. John’s University and holds NYS N-6 Permanent Certification. Candace is also Montessori Certified and taught for over ten years in a NYC Montessori school. Her experience also includes teaching for a Montessori Teacher Education Program and various other educational administrative roles.
James Scott joined Riverside in 2014 as our Administrative Coordinator. He is a graduate of Purdue University and has a BS in Aviation Technology. James’ strengths lay in customer service and employee relations. He has experience in hospitality, banking, and human resources. Most recently James was the site manager for City Medical of Union Square, an urgent care facility.
Gloria D’Onofrio joined Riverside in 2011 as our administrative assistant. She previously worked as a receptionist at a law firm for several years. Gloria enjoys having her daughter attend our older infant class at Riverside Montessori School.
